Allow us to introduce you to the UK’s leading rock and roll trio: The Platonics!
Performing a vibrant mix of 1950s hits from all the greats, including Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, and of course, Elvis Presley, The Platonics evoke the energy and excitement of the golden age of rock and roll. The Platonics are renowned for their musical talent and exhilarating style of performance, making it impossible for their audiences to resist shaking, rattling and rolling their way to the dance floor! As an exceedingly popular choice for weddings, parties and corporate events, we wanted to find out a bit more about the timeless rock n roll band. We invited lead guitarist and vocalist Dave to take part in our newest edition of In The Spotlight:
Who are The Platonics?
I play lead guitar and sing lead vocals, Dan is on drums and Tom is on double bass, both singing backing vocals.
Which song is your favourite to perform?
Definitely Johnny B Goode, only because we’re all ‘Back to the Future’ nuts!
Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a bit Back to the Future? When this absolute tune kicks in, the party must get so raucous you have to call de-law-in… DeLorean, get it? No? We’ll make like a tree and get outta here…
Out of the songs you’ve been asked to learn for a first dance, which is your favourite?
I would say we always enjoy playing ‘I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You‘ by Elvis, the king himself. We can’t think of a more beautiful song to publicly declare your ‘soppiness’ for someone!
One final song question, which is the song you can always rely on to fill the dance floor?
This ones a ‘toughy’! But if our lives depended on it, La Bamba!
La Bamba, performed by The Platonics
Do you get on with each other all of the time?
Yes absolutely! A really important part of being in a successful band is having a genuine friendship with each other. It’s essential when playing a gig.
Who has the most annoying habit (and what is it)?
I have to grow my fingernails quite long so I can fingerpick the guitar properly, and with a dash of nail polish, they would look lovely! Other than that no bad habits really, we’re all good honest clean folk. Although we all drive the van like formula one drivers.
At least you always make it to events on time!
What’s the best thing about being in a band?
Out of a very long list of things, I’d say it’s the privilege of helping couples celebrate their wedding days – being part of such a special day for them and doing everything we can to make their day memorable – it gives us a real kick. Not to mention eating loads of wedding cake! We always feel like one of the guests and there’s a lot of love in the room by the end of the night.
… and what’s the worst?
Eating too much wedding cake! (see above) Or parking a giant van in London.
What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened to you at a wedding?
We have a saying, every gig has a story, meaning something you never quite expect happens every time we play. I think this helps us to be flexible and no matter what happens, making sure the show goes on. A grown-up in a full Percy Pig costume appearing mid-song on the dance floor is still pretty weird, though! Or the time when the Irish bloke from DIY SOS appeared doing a full Russian dance hop in middle of Blue Suede Shoes.
And finally…the most important question: Buffet or Hog Roast?
Wow that’s the toughest question of them all! Hog roast, no buffet, depends if they have mushroom vol au vents?
Thank you to Dave for giving us an insight into the life of a rocking ‘n’ rolling wedding band!
