Read on to discover the band’s inspirations, Glen’s guaranteed floor-filler, and which band member belongs up a chimney!
Who are The In Crowd??
“We’re a group of 9 professional musicians who’ve played with a wide variety of household names, in an eclectic group of musical genres and at venues and festivals all over the world. Our standard line-up consists of Drums (Mike); Bass (Andy); Guitar (Paul); Keyboards (Stuart); Saxophones (Glen & Nichola); Vocals (Sara; Scott and Rosie).”
Give us a wow fact about your act!
“Our various band members have performed with artists who’ve had USA or UK top 10 hits in every decade since the 1950s.”
What inspired you all to become musicians?
“It’s the greatest job in the world!!! What could be better than doing the thing you love and helping other people to have a fantastic time? Personally speaking, my stepdad was a professional sax player and he was my idol so it seemed like the logical choice.”
Which song is your favourite to perform?
“Either Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder, because he’s basically a God, or Streetlife by Randy Crawford and The Crusaders…what a tune.”
Out of the songs you’ve been asked to learn, which is your favourite?
“I’d have to say Real Good Hands by Gregory Porter. Such a classy song!!!”
One final song question, which is the song you can always rely on to fill the dance floor?
“All of them, obviously, but September by Earth Wind & Fire never fails.”
Do you get on with each other all of the time?
“Yes, we’re all great friends. Three of us have been great mates and musical colleagues for 25 years, since we were kids. Those who we’ve recruited in recent years are from Zimbabwe, Australia and Essex!!! We all get on like a house on fire.”
Who has the most annoying habit (and what is it)?
“Probably me (Glen – saxophone/MD)…I’m a control freak.”
What’s the best thing about being in a band?
“The camaraderie, and the filthy sense of humour which all musicians seem to share.”
… and what’s the worst?
“Discovering the darkest depths of your friend’s sense of humour.”
What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened to you at a wedding?
“That’s definitely not for public consumption.”
Most memorable moment?
“At the moment, I’d have to say playing ‘Happy Birthday’ by Altered Images at a recent engagement. Rosie (vocals) did a great impression of Clare Grogan and the audience went nuts for it.”
If you weren’t musicians, what would you be doing?
“Well a few of us are a bit handy in the kitchen, so maybe there’d be a chef amongst us. Stuart (keyboards) is basically like the Artful Dodger from Oliver, so I can see him as a chimney sweep or some other Dickensian oik!!!”
