City Life at The Mawazine Festival

City Life at the Mawazine Festival 2018

Last Updated: 4th December 2024

We love hearing about all the amazing places our bands get to perform. Recently one of our bands – the incredible City Life – got the chance to perform at one of the world’s biggest music festivals, the Mawazine Festival in Morocco. We couldn’t wait to find out how City Life got on, so we had a chat with the band’s manager and lead guitarist, Mark, to find out.

Before we get into the Mawazine Festival, tell us a bit more about City Life.

“City Life are a 6-11 piece band that have been playing at events throughout the UK, Europe and UAE for the past 5 years. The band features some of the hottest talent on the London music scene and our flexible line-ups make us perfect for everything from small birthday parties through to massive festivals like Mawazine.”

Tell us more about Mawazine Festival

“Mawazine is held each year in Rabat, Morocco and is the largest music festival in Africa. It’s a great combination of international superstars, world music, dance and theatre. International performers this year included Bruno Mars, Jamiroquai, Texas and, of course, City Life!”

What was your role at the festival?

“We were lucky enough to be booked to play at the VIP after party. We played three sets a day over three nights. The sets started with a chilled out Jazz set and we then followed this with our usual mix of songs from the Greatest to the Latest. We made sure that we played songs from artists that were headlining the festival like Bruno Mars and Jamiroquai.”

City Life Singers

What was the atmosphere like when you were on stage?

“The guests were so appreciative and were all filming us all night. They are more reserved than your typical UK audience but our singers Daniel and Sabrina soon had them out of their seats!”

Which song (or songs) did the crowd love the most?

“24K Magic, Get Lucky and Aint Nobody.”

What were the most memorable moments of the three nights?

“Too many to mention but we all felt incredibly privileged to play at such a beautiful venue.”

Morocco Venue

What were your most memorable moments off-stage?

“It’s rare to have much downtime when you play at events abroad but the fact that we were there for 4 days allowed us to get to explore the city of Rabat. There were so many lovely Bazars and Kazbahs that we could have spent days exploring.”

Any crazy stories to share from the trip?

“I must admit to being slightly surprised when my guitar tested positive for explosives at the airport, it must have been the residue from all those hard rock riffs I’ve played over the years.”

Morocco at Night

What was the food like?

“Absolutely stunning, we had a team of waiters looking after us and each meal consisted of at least 5 courses. The first thing I did when I got back was to go for a run!!”

Did Mawazine festival live up to your expectations? Would you recommend a trip to the festival?

“The festival definitely lived up to expectations!! I think we’d all love to see it from an audience point of view and get to explore the different stages across the city.”
